Academia, professionals and the general public hardly agree about what AI is and what to expect from it. Mathematical Optimization has been adopted into industry and business processes for decades, but compared to the overall AI hype, it is flying under the radar of public attention. AI and Mathematical Optimization rarely compete and can form a powerful team. We will discuss how AI and Mathematical Optimization can work together and try to foresee a future where AI can help make Mathematical Optimization more accessible. We’ll discuss how we’ve leveraged mixed integer programming, an area less covered in existing literature compared to heuristics, to develop prototypes using Gurobi 11, achieving promising results. Lennart Lahrs holds MSc degrees from RWTH Aachen University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, with a focus on electrical engineering and operations research. Previously, he worked in software development and energy system research as part of agile teams. Within research contexts, Lennart applied discrete optimization to machine operations, fleet management and energy system design. Outside of work, Lennart enjoys sailing, cycling, and cooking.

More recently he has worked for a risk and compliance software business within their Enterprise division. Christopher lives in the UK near Manchester with his wife and two daughters. Outside of work Chris enjoys playing several sports including Golf, Football and Swimming.
