At the recent Gurobi Summit in Amsterdam, data scientist Martine Rønneberg delivered a compelling presentation on how optimization revolutionized logistics at BAMA, a leading Nordic fresh produce company.

With a supply chain spanning 18+ countries and strict freshness standards, BAMA faced daunting challenges in ensuring cost-effective, eco-friendly, and efficient deliveries. Martine’s insights reveal how mathematical optimization, powered by Gurobi, became the game-changer their operations needed.

The Challenges: Complex Value Chains and Inefficient Processes

BAMA’s logistics operations were no small feat. Handling perishable produce with diverse temperature requirements across a sprawling supply chain demanded precision.

Planners relied on manual methods—including spreadsheets, diagrams, and back-and-forth communications—which left room for inefficiency, higher costs, and environmental impacts like CO2 emissions.

The result? A pressing need for innovation to meet growing consumer demands for fresher, sustainable products.

The Solution: Optimization Meets Innovation

Enter Gurobi-powered mathematical optimization. BAMA teamed up with Gurobi to create a tailored solution that transformed their logistics processes. By modeling real-world constraints, such as truck capacity and customer delivery clusters, and developing a robust cloud-based system, BAMA achieved groundbreaking results.

The system, hosted on Azure, included a user-friendly interface that empowered transport planners to seamlessly interact with optimization models, adjust parameters, and view real-time results.

The Spain-to-Norway pilot project showcased the power of this approach, delivering €1 million in annual savings through better truck utilization. More importantly, it reduced emissions, improved product freshness, and freed up planners to focus on strategic decision-making rather than tedious manual tasks.

Key Takeaways: The Recipe for Success

What made BAMA’s optimization journey so successful? Collaboration was a cornerstone. By involving transport planners starting from the idea phase all the way to implementation, the team ensured their models reflected real-world dynamics.

A user-centric interface encouraged adoption, enabling planners to tweak variables and instantly see the impact. Finally, leveraging scalable cloud infrastructure allowed for rapid computations and long-term growth potential.

Martine also highlighted how optimization unlocked strategic benefits. The tools not only handled day-to-day planning but also enabled scenario testing and hypothesis validation. BAMA’s leadership quickly recognized the value, making optimization a key priority across the company.

Scaling the Impact: A Future Built on Optimization

With optimization as the new standard, BAMA is poised for continued success. The same infrastructure that supports their transport planning can scale to other areas of the business, driving efficiency and sustainability company-wide. As Martine aptly noted, the system is “scalable and robust,” providing a foundation for further innovation.

Fresh Thinking for Big Wins

Martine’s presentation was a testament to the power of optimization. For companies grappling with complex logistics, BAMA’s journey offers invaluable lessons: embrace collaboration, invest in intuitive tools, and think big with scalable technology. The results? Millions saved, fresher products, and a team ready to tackle the future with confidence.
